Land and Sovereignty: The Foundation for Public Art and Studio Practice
A talk with University of Kansas 2021 Common Work of Art Creator

"Land and Sovereignty: The Foundation for Public Art and Studio Practice"

Internationally recognized artist and KU alum Hock E Aye Vi Edgar Heap of Birds will speak about issues of place and power in his public artworks and studio practice. Five text-based panels from the artist’s renowned Native Hosts series are installed in front of the Spencer Museum of Art and were selected for this year’s Common Work of Art. Native Hosts is just one example of Heap of Birds’ numerous and thought-provoking public interventions that acknowledge the historical displacement of Native Americans from their homelands and the contemporary presence of Native Americans across the Americas and the world.

Presented by:
The Graduate Students of the History of Art DEAI Committee, The University of Kansas Kress Foundation Department of Art History, The Spencer Museum of Art, Haskell Indian Nations University, and KU First Nations Student Association
